Product Descriptions: let's do this Thing properly
You're not silly: I obviously don't need to tell you that selling online is enormously competitive.
When a potential customer clicks on any given product, they don't just want to know its specifications...most of the time they also want to know a lot more besides.
Why so many product descriptions fail to sell their product
Sadly, E-commerce websites throughout the internet are comprised of generic product descriptions supplied by the manufacturer. Sometimes they're written by an employee who, due to a lack of marketing knowledge, cannot accurately convey the best selling points, the various benefits on offer and other critical things. As a result, many customers make an instant decision to go elsewhere, entirely missing the point that was right before their eyes. For these business owners, it's a tragedy to think that had the description been better, they'd have probably stayed and bought that product.
How to do it right
I've written countless product descriptions for all kinds of companies: cheese, wine, champagne, fish, chocolate, coffee, IT and marketing services. Unique, carefully thought-out descriptions really do help to sell a product. So remember: just because you know why a consumer should buy your product, that doesn't always mean that everyone else will.
Additionally, brand-new content that cannot be found anywhere in the Universe (unlike those generic product descriptions supplied by the manufacturer...) is great because it adds real value to your website. It may be quicker, easier and cheaper to upload a hundred pre-written product descriptions, but Google and the other search engines won't much like it. Wouldn't you rather stand apart?
Head on over to my Portfolio of work for a detailed look at what I've done.
